This National Endowment for the Arts awarded the M.A. in Gallery & Museum Management at Western Colorado University a Research: Art Works grant in 2019 to produce a report on the US Art & Design Market. The report is intended to make innovative use of US government tax and labor statistics data to provide insights for all 50 states and District of Columbia for 21 occupations and 14 industries which make up the art market. Our methodology defines the Art Market as the commercial exchanges of ownership in artworks, but artworks themselves can be further subdivided into the disciplines of Fine Art (painting, graphics, drawing, sculpture); Applied Art (jewelry, furniture, ceramics, textiles), i.e. objects that are both beautiful and simultaneously serve a function; and Commercial Art (graphic design, commercial photography), which has the express intention of aiding the consumption of another economic product. The report gives data on numbers of workers in occupations and sales in industries. It also provides demographic data on gender and racial backgrounds of the workers in the art market.
