Leadership has always been a significant piece of arts and cultural management, yet the concept is constantly evolving from multiple disciplines, over time, and between cultures. Rapid globalization leads to a demand for new forms of leadership, including complex problem solving and social skills. Employing a systematic literature review, this paper explores the ways in which leadership has been researched in the arts management context over time. In addition to offering a description of arts leadership research, the inquiry sheds light on how aspects of systems intelligence are explored and described in this larger body of research. Findings suggest that systems intelligence is described, but not explicitly defined, in our traditional notion of arts leadership. This research contributes to an understanding of how arts leadership is examined and described which has implications for both the formal study and practice of arts leadership.
