Heidi Waleson, opera critic of the Wall Street Journal, discusses her “Mad Scenes and Exit Arias: The Death of the New York City Opera and the Future of Opera in America” (Metropolitan 2018; Picador paperback 2019), which charts the demise of a major legacy cultural institution. In 2013, following a decade of disastrous missteps, the 70-year old company filed for bankruptcy. It is both a cautionary tale, and a dramatic, real-world example of how failures in management and governance can prove fatal to cultural institutions. The City Opera story offers a compelling case study of what not to do – and how easily organizations can fall into that path. This session explores the interlocking elements that brought down the company, and their enduring relevance to all kinds of nonprofits, including its history, business model, vision/mission, management, governance, and fiscal irresponsibility. It also looks at how other opera companies tackled some of the same environmental challenges.
