Is There A Relationship Between Personal Finance Literacy And the Financial Administration of Arts Organizations?
According to a lyric sung by the late African-American blues singer Alberta Hunter “You cain’t have romance without finance.” The same is true in terms of longevity and survival of profit and non-for-profit organizations. More specifically, arts organizations do not exist for very long without effective financial management and financial support from various external sources.

But there is a deeper issue that is pertinent to the training of arts administrators at the graduate level and it is this: if finances and financial administration is the bedrock foundation of an arts organization, how pertinent is the personal financial literacy of those in charge of the organization? My answer is: very pertinent.

1 PM EDT: The Development Characteristics of Cultural Industries in "COVID-19" Epidemic and its Post-epidemic Pattern Reorganization
During the outbreak, as the offline physical cultural industries are in a state of temporary closure, new forms and new models have emerged in the online digital cultural industry, which will have a far-reaching impact on both inside and outside of the industry. Social media, characterized by real-time release, mutual attention and sharing, constructs an "interactive field" for information dissemination; The huge demand for home entertainment has led to a surge in online entertainment consumption such as online video, digital audio and digital games, which has reshaped the new form of cultural consumption. After the epidemic, with the advent of the 5G era, the dual-wheel drive with digital technology and cultural creativity, as a new engine of economic growth and a new factor of production, will promote the restructuring and upgrading of the future pattern of cultural industry.

1 PM EDT: Education at Lincoln Center: The Past Speaks to the Future
In 1975, a group of artists were asked by Lincoln Center to help its emergent education department forge a new vision for the way New York City students could experience the arts. I have spent the past seven years as an administrator at Lincoln Center piloting a program that aims to reimagine our practices to more deeply consider the needs, interests, and challenges of our individual partner schools, which are primarily situated within marginalized communities. Through analysis of over two dozen individual and group interviews and a trove of archival documents, this paper elucidates my understanding of the opportunities and tensions that framed Lincoln Center’s formative years in education, revealing points of resonance and dissonance with my experience shaping a new initiative. Our shared meaning-making addresses issues of assessment, sustainability, and racial and class disparities, as well as provides recommendations around best practices in the field of arts education administration.

1 PM EDT: Teaching Research Literacy
Research literacy remains an underdeveloped skill for many arts managers. Nonetheless, research drives every aspect of their work; to write winning grants, successfully attract and pursue donors, gain new audiences, produce fruitful advocacy campaigns, and differentiate between best and not-quite-best practices. They also benefit from research on diversity and inclusion, arts participation, creative industries development, and many other areas. But, not all research is equal. Articles published in prominent journals or promoted by otherwise legitimate outlets may still be unreliable due to research limitations. It’s up to individual arts managers to be cautious, informed consumers. Whether you’ve taken (or taught) courses in research methods or are a research newbie, you’ll benefit from this presentation’s approach to research literacy through key skills including being wary of big data, the importance of research tool criticism, the myth of research neutrality, problems with data visualization, and more. This workshop is informative and interactive.

1 PM EDT: Towards a Constructive Epistemology of Arts Management Education
I articulate a sequence of epistemological inquiries for arts management students to use to frame solid responses to management challenges. I argue that four different dimensions of management knowledge are embodied in management teaching and should be recognized independently with their own learning outcomes and appropriate pedagogies. I label these variants: Normative, Positivist, Diagnostic, and Prescriptive, which should be evaluated in sequence for given issues and stakeholders. Normative analysis highlights issues of principles and values; Positivist analysis addresses empirical observation of data in light of principal explanatory theories; Diagnostic analysis embodies cause-and-effect evaluation of past data, and evaluation of possible future scenarios. Prescriptive analysis is a stage for proposing management action.

3 PM EDT: Making Capstone Count: A Discussion About the Culminating Student Academic Experience
Have you heard this about Capstone Projects? “This is a lot of work!” “I’m graduating soon, do I really need one more class with so much work involved?” “Can I at least put this on my resume?” Capstone courses can be both overwhelming and enthralling. As students wrap up other classes, start thinking about graduation and obtaining jobs, the capstone represents the zenith of a student’s academic prowess. This session will be an examination of how capstone courses have evolved in order to facilitate 21st Century academic needs such as critical thinking, collaboration, leadership, flexibility, initiative, and social skills. After a brief overview, the session will highlight the considerations of program directors and academics when designing and implementing capstones. In the second half of the session, attendees will break into small groups to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their capstones and panelists will lead a discussion on the best steps forward.

1 PM EDT: Arts Leadership: A Systematic Literature Review
Leadership has always been a significant piece of arts and cultural management, yet the concept is constantly evolving from multiple disciplines, over time, and between cultures. Rapid globalization leads to a demand for new forms of leadership, including complex problem solving and social skills. Employing a systematic literature review, this paper explores the ways in which leadership has been researched in the arts management context over time. In addition to offering a description of arts leadership research, the inquiry sheds light on how aspects of systems intelligence are explored and described in this larger body of research. Findings suggest that systems intelligence is described, but not explicitly defined, in our traditional notion of arts leadership. This research contributes to an understanding of how arts leadership is examined and described which has implications for both the formal study and practice of arts leadership.

1 PM EDT: Prepare Metaskills of Students for Global Arts Leadership through Mentored Research
The constant systemic change in the globalized arts community and art market calls for arts administrators with effective metaskills. This research article takes the pedagogical action research approach to study the process of a mentored undergraduate research on the Chinese contemporary art market. this article argues that mentored undergraduate research on arts administration topics in minority communities or international contexts enhances students’ metaskills. The mentored research process guides students to learn from the discomfort of conducting academic research in another culture and experiencing the messy process of knowledge creation. The research attempts to address the three questions: 1. How does the research on the Chinese contemporary art market deepen the student’s understanding of the diverse arts ecosystem co-existing and interacting with each other in the globalized world? 2. How does the process of research bring the student’s awareness of integrating knowledge and skills trained through liberal arts education into professional metaskills? 3. What lessons can be learned from the mentored research process?

1 PM EDT: Creativity that Works: An Interdisciplinary Framework for Developing Arts Professionals
This presentation will share the framework for the Creativity that Works (CTW) initiative developed by the School of the Arts (SOA) at Converse College. Our goals include (1) incorporating critical thinking and creative expression in all areas of study, (2) providing external educational experiences that enrich the overall learning process, and (3) providing training in career management. In order to do so, we increased experiential learning opportunities, developed new courses, and increased audience engagement opportunities beyond the campus community. The CTW framework has also served to create a greater sense of community and collaboration within the SOA as we ensure students have access to critical skills that are necessary regardless of their chosen arts discipline. We train students to be working professionals in the arts by fostering communication, creativity, and scholarship.

1 PM EDT: Pipelines to Where? : Critical Inquiry of Pathways into Arts Administration
Leadership development programs and pipelines are a hot topic within arts management programs and the arts and culture sector as a whole. These programs are often designed by people who may not experience the same barriers to access or metrics of success as people who do not share their same backgrounds (i.e. race, class, ability, gender, sexuality etc.). This session aims to explore the pipelines through which we have all navigated to arrive at our current positions, examining privilege, power, barriers to access, levers for change, and reinforcing feedback loops, all of which inform how equity is positioned and fostered within the sector. Through examining our own lived experiences and discussing empirical research on cultural equity co-authored by the presenting team, session participants will workshop actionable steps to create culture shifts within their institutions and organizations, supporting more culturally relevant and equitable leadership development programs.

1 PM EDT: Building up a Résumé: an Assessment of a Practicum Model and the Effects on Professional Development for Modern Languages and Cultural Management Alumni
This paper assesses the impact a practicum model has had in career development for alumni of a BA in Modern Languages and Cultural Management. The research questions address both the experience provided to students by the practicum itself and the effect that the inclusion of such experiences in their résumés had when seeking employment. Additionally, it examines the experiences of current students in their final semester since the practicum model has been restructured. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with both alumni and students. Conclusions point towards a positive impact in professional development, mainly because the practicum program has provided former students with previous work experiences that can be included in résumés, while or even if the practicum experiences themselves might not have been as instructing or fruitful. Taking this into consideration, the author suggests adjustments to the practicum program so that it meets all of its objectives and fulfills students’ expectations.

1 PM EDT: Breaking Out of the Box: Teaching Legal Issues For Real
Legal errors can mean the difference between organizational life and death. If available at all, is the traditional “legal issues” class really helpful? Let’s think differently about preparing arts administration students to manage legal issues. The end-game is not for arts managers to be their own lawyers; it’s for them to recognize when it’s time to consult a qualified attorney. This session will propose incorporating the development of that practical skill, into students’ existing coursework.

1 PM EDT: Using Podcasts to Enhance Student Learning Inside & Outside the Classroom
Podcasts help us learn about a myriad of subjects. They inform us about current events and issues that may not yet be written about. This is no less the case for many topics covered in arts administration. Podcasts also allow us to bring additional “guest speakers” into the classroom. This session covers how to use podcasts to further student understanding and support teaching, as well as demonstrate how to teach the creation of podcasts. The session pulls from personal experiences using podcasts in curriculum from having students listen to podcasts throughout the semester to learning how to create their own. This session will share tips and tools for taking your class to the next level using podcasts, which is a tangible way to rethink student learning outcomes, expand access to knowledge for people who are differently-abled, and helps us re-imagine the future of knowledge objects and public scholarship.

1 PM EDT: Career Duality: A Strategy for Career Empowerment and Maximizing Resources in the Arts
The creative industries offer the opportunity to pursue a career as either a creative (artist, producer, songwriter, etc.) or as a "logician" (artist manager, arts administrator, agent, entertainment attorney, venue manager, etc.) Though both vocational paths are integral to a viable industry, the work of calling songs into existence or entertaining an audience differs from working with the administrative aspects of the business. And while the daily activities of creatives may differ from those of the logician, some may sense a call to Career Duality, to work on both sides of the industry as a Career Dualist. Career Duality involves the deliberate pursuit of a dual career as both a creative and a logician, which is stimulated by the drive to express dual proclivities that are simultaneously artistic and analytical. This session speaks to the dilemma experienced by those struggling with career decisions involving whether to work in the industry using their analytical abilities, or to work as a creative, or to do both. The session also explores the potential for maximizing arts resources through a Career Duality approach.

1 PM EDT: Segmentation Models for Arts Public Relations: Finding an Audience for Opera
How are non-profit boutique opera companies with limited operational budgets targeting and engaging with their publics? This question must be answered if these opera companies are to maintain relevance against an evolving landscape of financial instability, numerous entertainment options, and varied communication techniques. My starting point is that establishing strong connections between non-profit boutique opera companies and their current and potential audiences is essential, to both artistic and financial longevity. Segmentation can provide a successful tool for public relations practice, by targeting these audiences and tailoring communications and engagement activities accordingly.

The research I undertook explores the possible use of segmentation by non-profit boutique opera companies in their public relations activities. Using a qualitative methodology, I conducted a field study with non-profit boutique opera companies located in Toronto. Drawing from the findings I present an overview analysis and outline potential administrative and audience-building strategies for non-profit boutique opera companies.

10 AM EDT: ENCATC/AAAE Global Conversations
While the COVID-19 crisis imposed a quick reactive transfer of our well-trodden face-to-face modes of learning and teaching (L&T) into the digital environment, educators’ reflective insight across the world has tended, understandably, to examine these changes primarily from a deficit perspective (i.e. to focus on what ‘we used to do that we can’t do anymore’).
Yet, we all know that ‘face-to-face’ is not totally perfect! Indeed, many will suggest that the move to digital is promoting healthy questioning of all aspects and modes of our learning and teaching practice, off and online.
In this context, and as we have now experienced some of the challenges and opportunities of going digital, the most productive debate that we can have at this transitional point in time is to ask ourselves these questions:
  • What do we think are the opportunities afforded by going digital?
  • What do we think that we can achieve better in a digital environment that we didn’t think about when teaching face-to-face?
  • Is there a useful mix of pedagogies here that is of benefit to learning and teaching communities?
  • What are the challenges and the main issues at stake in the transition to digital?
  • How must we adapt our teaching expectations and learning outcomes for the potential impact on the broader cultural arts landscape?
The ENCATC/AAAE Global Conversations session will seek to examine these issues via moderated Town Hall discussion. All are welcome to attend.

1 PM EDT: Specialist vs Generalist: recruiting the most effective board members for arts organizations
Boards of directors play a central and integral role in the performance of any arts organization. Each member brings their own experience, lens and expertise to the table. However, not every board member is created equally. Some members of elite boards serve to retain or attain social status, while others’ main motivation is one of sustainability, diversity or corporate responsibility. Regardless of this, it is essential for arts organizations to have the right mix of board members to ensure harmony, synergy and institution performance. A central question organizations face in each recruitment cycle is: what member backgrounds would lead to the most effective mix of board members and success of the organization? This paper studies board members through gaining insights into recruitment and eventual membership.

1 PM EDT: The Politics of Play: Using Simulations and Role Playing to Build Cultural Competencies and Emotional Intelligence
Sackler Donations. #MeToo. Microaggressions. Macroaggressions. Trigger Warnings. Equitable pay. Patron data collection, use, and privacy. Covid19. Diversity and Inclusion. Exclusivity. Inclusivity. Color conscious casting. Colorblind casting. Deaccessioning. Appropriation. Social Justice. Social Responsibility.
The complexities of today’s arts workplace require a nuanced approach, and our students need to be prepared to respond to challenges both effectively and empathetically. Role playing and simulations can aid students to be better able to “think on their feet” and learn to be adept at solving problems in real time. Importantly, role playing provides students with hands-on “real world” experience in a safe environment: the classroom.

From high-stakes scenarios to everyday workplace challenges, the exercises examined in this session will include a collective bargaining scenario, a gala seating activity, and a series of “What would you do?” role playing scenarios.

Our students need to practice the skills that will help them develop emotional intelligence and cultural competencies so that they can better meet the ethical challenges facing the field today. In 2013, leadership educators and theorists Corey Seemiller and Thomas Murray called for the development of a range of leadership competencies in our students. Many of these core competencies are directly related to ethical leadership: personal behavior (including follow through, resiliency, and responding to change and ambiguity); learning and reasoning (reflection and application or decision making), and civic responsibility (including the issues of diversity and inclusion).

Even seasoned professionals face the inherent challenge that “hindsight is 20/20,” but providing our students with opportunities to examine, explore, and engage in complex scenarios, in the relative safety of the classroom, can help prepare them for the complex challenges of the arts workplace.

1 PM EDT: The Death of the New York City Opera: A Case Study
Heidi Waleson, opera critic of the Wall Street Journal, discusses her “Mad Scenes and Exit Arias: The Death of the New York City Opera and the Future of Opera in America” (Metropolitan 2018; Picador paperback 2019), which charts the demise of a major legacy cultural institution. In 2013, following a decade of disastrous missteps, the 70-year old company filed for bankruptcy. It is both a cautionary tale, and a dramatic, real-world example of how failures in management and governance can prove fatal to cultural institutions. The City Opera story offers a compelling case study of what not to do – and how easily organizations can fall into that path. This session explores the interlocking elements that brought down the company, and their enduring relevance to all kinds of nonprofits, including its history, business model, vision/mission, management, governance, and fiscal irresponsibility. It also looks at how other opera companies tackled some of the same environmental challenges.

1 PM EDT: Blank Canvas: Explorative Behavior and Personal Agency in Arts Entrepreneurship Education
How do arts students learn to behave like entrepreneurs? Experiential and entrepreneurial learning theories in arts entrepreneurship education (Toscher, 2019) lead us to believe that in order facilitate entrepreneurial knowledge generation which “enables [entrepreneurs] to recognize and act on entrepreneurial opportunities and to organize and manage new ventures” (Politis, 2005, p. 400) , individuals need to exercise personal agency and engage in explorative behavior (Kolb & Kolb, 2009; Politis, 2005). If an aim of a particular arts education is to help students generate such entrepreneurial knowledge, educators should arguably create learning environments in which their students can exercise personal agency and behave exploratively. Using rigorous analysis of empirical data (including in depth interviews, observations, course deliverables and student learning diaries) from a course in arts entrepreneurship, this paper presents an empirically derived pedagogical model of how students exercise personal agency and explore in the arts entrepreneurship education classroom.

1 PM EDT: The University of Akron's Arts Administration Internship Structure and Outcomes: A Case Study
This study, as part of a Master’s thesis requirement, was conducted and designed to gain an understanding of how much arts administration students at The University of Akron learn during their internship experience. This was compared to what they had learned in the classroom. Research questions pertained to the factors influencing attainment of arts administration content knowledge and professional competencies, and to the satisfaction level after completion of the internship. After looking at different ways of collecting data for this study, a survey was selected as the primary instrument. This thesis was not only intended to provide the university with recommendations for the internship curriculum structure, but to contribute research to the field of arts administration.

3 PM EDT: Culturally Responsive, Collaborative Arts Program Development and Evaluation: Who is the expert?
How students and/or graduates are supported and mentored by practitioners? This guiding question for the conference invites us to think about our role as Arts Administrators and Educators/Researchers. In this paper, we offer that our on-going, collaborative partnership among university, arts organization, and K-12 students has created a praxis not only between theory and practice but also among practitioner, researcher, and student. Specifically, we address 1) How does program design and implementation shift (both in limitations and in opportunities) in a Culturally Responsive and Collaborative Evaluation iterative process?; and 2) How did we negotiate our changing roles as both expert and student throughout the process? This research suggests that CRCE has positive implications for reflexive program design and implementation and has meaningful impacts on the researcher, arts administrator, and the participants as both experts and students.

1 PM EDT: Arts Ecosystem Research Project: Linking Student Research with Community Benefit
The Arts Ecosystem Research Project has brought together arts management graduate students with over one hundred community practitioners in the first two years of a multi-year applied research initiative to gather, document, and analyze fifty years of the Seattle region’s arts and culture history. Qualitative research methods are being used by students to capture the lived experiences of those who created this rich ecosystem, analyzing lessons of the past to inform the future. Close collaboration with the University’s Library and a highly-respected diverse group of Community Advisors led to the development of a rigorous curriculum and the creation of a publicly-focused digital timeline and website linked to a permanent repository for student research. This experimental project has brought together the academic and practitioner communities, and is seen as opening up myriad opportunities for students, the University, and the regional arts sector.

The session includes a presentation introducing the development of open source materials for an undergraduate introductory arts administration course. The aim of these open source material grants meets the ever-present challenges associated with printed materials: lack of agility in printed textbooks and rising cost of college textbooks (an 812% increase since 1978). The agility in open source material also helps to address concerns of regularly changing environments in arts administration roles, specifically issues related to advocacy, censorship, economics, technology, and emerging management trends. The presentation will provide a process for creating open source materials, a survey of current textbook resources, pedagogical advantages of open source materials, and technology used to create dynamic presentations of materials.

To our students, the world appears to be unraveling. The problems we face are interconnected and global and require a deeper understanding of how to work in systems and in collaboration. Students require new skills and knowledge in order to make meaningful change though the arts and in their communities. This session explores the relationship between climate disruption, social justice, international relationships, and intercultural competence and how arts management programs can, and should, prepare and inspire students to use their roles as arts presenters and community conveners to be responsive to opportunities and make positive change. In this interactive session, participants will identify the most relevant issues facing students, and discover and highlight current philosophies and arts strategies being applied to address them in the U.S. and Europe. The session concludes with shared action steps such as creating a transatlantic toolbox to share best practices or hold ongoing dialogue.

3 PM EDT: Muses, Ivory Towers, and The Real World: Education and Professional Experiences of Arts Management Alumnae
Women’s historical roles as volunteers, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the arts are crucial to understanding the operation of arts organizations and anticipating future needs. McCarthy (1991) explains that women’s leadership in organizations came from their roles as volunteers. Women developed leadership skills by organizing charity organizations and women’s clubs. In an era when formal education was unavailable to most women, these associations provided opportunities in which women learned from each other while advancing social good, enabling them to be more successful leaders. The field of arts management has since professionalized and is matched with formal education and degrees in arts management. This research relies on phenomenology to produce qualitative data reflecting the educational, managerial experiences of arts management alumnae to determine how higher arts management education impacts women’s professional and voluntary leadership in arts nonprofits. It then applies the recommendations of alumnae to examine current curriculum of arts management programs.

1 PM EDT: Issues in the Convergence of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Intellectual Property Protection System
Intangible Cultural heritage (hereinafter referred to as ICH) is defined as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. As an important manifestation of human intelligence achievements, includes many projects with exclusive characteristics. They have inevitable and intimate connection with modern intellectual property law system in the process of naturally enjoying and actively seeking modern law guarantee. Safeguarding intellectual property rights, so to speak, is one of the most important methods of protecting ICH, and also a good way to involve ICH projects in modern society and inherit and develop them with the help of law. However, at the moment, there are many issues to be solved in the convergence of ICH and intellectual property protection system.

3 PM EDT: Current trends in Arts Management Curricula in the UK
Arts management is still young and evolving but it is also a dynamic discipline and one that has steadily matured over the past fifty or so years. Over this period, not only have the fields of study and the range and scope of the subjects explored gradually expanded, not least given what seems to be the inherent interdisciplinary nature of the field. This paper assesses the key patterns, themes and trends in the discipline in the context of HE in the United Kingdom – what are the factors shaping arts management in the UK? What are the relationships between arts management and other fields and what modes of interdisciplinarity does it engage with? How is this affecting our field?

This roundtable brainstorming session, co-facilitated by AAAE board members Diane Claussen and Kevin Maifeld, is designed to consider organizational frameworks and business structures for an AAAE arts management consulting group. The consulting idea resurfaced at the 2019 AAAE Fall Board Retreat when members were asked to brainstorm about new revenue-generating ideas for the organization. Topics to be considered: legal, business and financial structures and questions; the consulting market and AAAE’s “niche” in the field; the AAAE brand and marketing opportunities in the arts consulting economy; the future of arts management consulting; students, alums and professors participation models; and integration and/or partnerships with AAAE member programs and individual consultants. The session features networking and resource sharing as well as participation in the co-creation of a potential new arts management consulting practice model and a new revenue stream to support AAAE’s programming and growth to support the arts management field.

3 PM EDT: NEA Report on US Art and Design Market
This National Endowment for the Arts awarded the M.A. in Gallery & Museum Management at Western Colorado University a Research: Art Works grant in 2019 to produce a report on the US Art & Design Market. The report is intended to make innovative use of US government tax and labor statistics data to provide insights for all 50 states and District of Columbia for 21 occupations and 14 industries which make up the art market. Our methodology defines the Art Market as the commercial exchanges of ownership in artworks, but artworks themselves can be further subdivided into the disciplines of Fine Art (painting, graphics, drawing, sculpture); Applied Art (jewelry, furniture, ceramics, textiles), i.e. objects that are both beautiful and simultaneously serve a function; and Commercial Art (graphic design, commercial photography), which has the express intention of aiding the consumption of another economic product. The report gives data on numbers of workers in occupations and sales in industries. It also provides demographic data on gender and racial backgrounds of the workers in the art market.

1 PM EDT: The Map Strikes Back: From Empires to Empowerment
Maps have a long history as tools of power. With them, conquerors and kings claimed and named territories, erased populations and identities; planners and developers reshape cities. Scholars of cartography, community organizers, and cultural planners have learned to engage communities in participatory asset mapping to re- assert control over identity, meaning, and futures of their communities. As a foundational practice of cultural planning, cultural asset mapping is a critical skill for future cultural leaders. Through the practice they can identify shared values, understand multiple cultural dimensions of place, and take stock of stories and meaning. Map making can also be a participatory creative practice led by artists. This presentation reviews how creative cultural asset mapping techniques enable and empower leaders to better understand and engage the communities in which they live and work. A case study of an artist-led cultural mapping project in Massachusetts illustrates techniques to involve communities, find new ways to appreciate the diversity of cultures present, and contribute to building stronger communities.

1 PM EDT: A Work in Progress: The Current Status of Art Management Curricula in Chinese Universities
This proposal mainly focuses on the current situation of art management curricula in Chinese universities. Since Chinese Arts Management education field is still in its infancy as programs have only existed for the past ten to fifteen years, and there is no curriculum standard like those developed by AAAE in the US, Chinese universities typically offer courses borrowed from Western Art Administration programs while including information about China’s unique cultural system and art market, which has always be challenging. In order to let prospective students and professional peers better understand the course design and education goals, a systematic study of Chinese Art Management curricula should be conducted. Qualitative methods are used to perform textual analysis based on the course information provided by several typical yet distinct Chinese universities. It analyzes their strengths and weaknesses, identifies and compares their educational objectives. Lastly, it lists several challenges facing this profession in China.

Through interactive presentations and round-table discussions with former MA students, this session will present three case studies of successful collaborative programs developed between MA Art Curatorship and MA Art Management programs at the University of Melbourne and local creative industries. The first case will focus on the partnership between the University of Melbourne and the Australian Center for the Moving Image, ACMI X that provided a robust platform for industry placement research internships for graduate students. The second case will discuss an experimental Industry Engagement Learning Project (IEL) implemented in 2018 as a part of the graduate course AMGT90004 States, Governments and the Arts. The IEL Project engaged 32 students to participate in a collaboration with the industry partner, Stoneclap Company, to organize an experimental community event – Digital Performance Culture Now, that brought together local and international artists with the help of teleconference technologies. Finally, the presentation will showcase learning achievements of several graduate students who participated in the accelerator program at the University of Melbourne in the Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre, Translating Research at Melbourne (TRaM). In May - June 2019 the  team of 3 graduate students under my leadership successfully passed 2 stages of the TRaM business accelerator to explore an opportunity for a development of a research consultancy start up to target the cultural sector and  offer innovative digital and data-driven solutions for strategic planning and audience development.

12 PM EDT: Learning to Be One’s Self or A Specialist: A Case Study of Liberal Arts Education in a Chinese College
Is learning to be one’s self or a specialist? To answer this question, this study first overviews the sociocultural contextualization of liberal arts education in Chinese history, and finds out that the ultimate goal of it is learning for one’s self. To understand the current situation, in-depth interviews and questionnaires were conducted among 40 art communication majors in Beijing Dance Academy. The results show that most students have high expectations on liberal arts education. However, the mission of liberal arts education is vague and the benefit is invisible and there is lack of relevant resources. Meanwhile, utilitarianism is penetrated into Chinese education. Consequently, they make more efforts on their specialization, which may enhance their overall competitiveness in the job market. In fact, vocational training and liberal arts education are interconnected and integral parts of college learning. Future implications for the research are also included.

3 PM EDT: Data and Deliberation: How Some Arts Organizations are Using Data to Understand Audiences
Even before the Covid-19 pandemic shuttered performances, many nonprofit performing arts organizations faced challenges. National statistics show stagnant or declining attendance across many art forms associated with the nonprofit performing arts. While the problem is widely acknowledged, there is less consensus or confidence about how organizations can respond. Can data and market research help? This presentation addresses that question by offering interim findings from research on the experiences of 25 performing arts organizations in The Wallace Foundation’s Building Audiences for Sustainability initiative. Francie Ostrower is Principal Investigator of a multiyear evaluation of the initiative, being conducted at The University of Texas at Austin, and commissioned and funded by The Wallace Foundation. The presentation concludes by inviting audience members to discuss curricular implications.

Tandem management is a common practice in performing arts organizations. Arts administration education relies on management theory developed from the business sector, where tandem management is uncommon at best, and nearly nonexistent. How can higher education best prepare arts administration students for success in tandem management, when foundational literature does not account for the unique reason of the need for dual managers, such as Artistic and Managing Directors? From the lens of theatre, this paper traces why tandem management has prevailed as the dominating management style in US nonprofit theatre and makes the argument for why simply learning management theory from the business world insufficiently prepares future arts leaders. Finally, this paper proposes strategies to better prepare arts administration students for successful careers in arts upper management.
